Ben Oakes is out to kill Trampas for killing his brother during a bank robbery. He has been pushed into the situation by his friend Jed Cooper with whom he spent five years in prison for the bank robbery. Trampas and Elizabeth are in Hanna where she is buying clothes and he is waiting for baler parts. Elizabeth leaves on the stage for Medicine Bow but Tramapas is forced to stay to inspect the parts. Ben tracks the stage he assumes Trampas is on but the stage wrecks killing everyone but Elizabeth who is blinded. Ben finds her and she convinces him to help her return to Shiloh but they become lost in the mountains when he tries a shortcut and horseless until The Virginian and David finds them. Elizabeth uses Ben as a crutch during her blindness but also falls in love with him. However, Ben is planning to kill Trampas when he arrives and then leave so initially he tries to avoid Elizabeth. Carl Bascom returns to Burgess, California after several years absence. He visits Reba Burgess, showing her a signed agreement with her husband giving him half interest in the mine she operates. Reba takes it to Perry, who does not have good news, but she prefers to handle the problem herself. Perry sends Paul in to investigate the situation, anyway. Prior to Bascom's departure, he had closed down the Burgess mine, putting many of the locals out of work. Bascom had become a partner in the mine but claimed to have found irregularities in the books. On a trip to the cemetery to visit his old friend, Steve recalls how Johnny Wade rescues a young runaway Steve Hill during a train stop on the way to Medicine Bow. Steve is accused of stabbing the brakeman but Johnny clears him by pointing out the guilty party. Johnny via an old friendship finds both of them jobs on a ranch neighboring Shiloh. Johnny takes Steve under his wing and teaches him how to be a ranch hand and how to shoot. A new owner Georgia Price buys the ranch and decides to crowd the neighboring ranches off the open grazing land by doubling her herd to make fast money. Her foreman quits and Johnny who hates barbed wire and fencing cattle ranges takes over. Steve comes to see Johnny is wrong after a discussion with Judge Garth and a run in with the Texans Georgia hired. He leaves and takes a job at Shiloh. In the history of the Olympics, there's never been a controversy quite like what ensued over the 100 meter race at Seoul in 1988. The match brought together Carl Lewis (USA) and Ben Johnson (Canada) who had been fierce competitors. Lewis was known as a savvy careerist who became an American hero at the previous Los Angeles Olympics. Johnson was his chief rival, considered an underdog due to his recovery from a pulled hamstring. In less than 10 seconds, Johnson edged out in front of Lewis to win the Seoul race. But that wasn't the end. Three days later, in a reversal of fortune, the Olympic committee announced that Johnson had failed a drug test, losing his medal to Lewis in disgrace. A mystery still shrouds the race. Was Johnson exceptional in his drug usage or merely the fall guy for a widespread practice?
